General AI

General AI is a hypothetical form of artificial intelligence capable of performing a wide variety of intellectual tasks at a level similar to human intelligence.

Overview

When people imagine highly intelligent machines that can learn, reason, adapt, and solve problems across many domains, they are usually describing General AI.

Unlike Narrow AI, General AI would not be limited to a specific task.

It could potentially transfer knowledge from one area to another and operate with a level of flexibility similar to humans.

Importantly, General AI does not currently exist.

It remains a theoretical concept and an active topic of discussion within the AI community.

Why It Matters

General AI frequently appears in discussions about the future of artificial intelligence.

Understanding the difference between current AI systems and hypothetical future systems helps create more informed conversations about opportunities, risks, and expectations.

Real-World Example

There is currently no confirmed real-world example of General AI.

All publicly available AI systems today are considered forms of Narrow AI.
