TPU

A specialized processor designed specifically for machine learning and AI applications.

TPU

Overview

As artificial intelligence workloads became more demanding, organizations began developing hardware specifically designed for machine learning.

One example is the TPU.

TPU stands for Tensor Processing Unit.

Unlike GPUs, which were originally created for graphics processing, TPUs were designed from the beginning to accelerate machine learning operations.

A helpful way to think about the difference is comparing a general-purpose tool with a specialized tool.

Both can accomplish similar tasks, but the specialized tool is optimized for a particular purpose.

TPUs excel at performing the mathematical operations commonly used in neural networks and deep learning systems.

They are often used in large-scale AI training and inference environments where performance and efficiency are critical.

As AI models continue growing in complexity, specialized hardware such as TPUs is becoming increasingly important.

Why It Matters

TPUs help accelerate machine learning workloads and improve efficiency for AI applications.

Real-World Example

A cloud provider may use TPUs to train and serve large-scale AI models.
