Temperature

A setting that controls how predictable or creative an AI model's outputs are.

Temperature

Overview

Have you ever noticed that some AI responses feel highly predictable while others feel more creative?

One factor that influences this behavior is temperature.

Temperature is a model setting that controls how much randomness is introduced when generating outputs. Lower temperatures generally produce more predictable and consistent responses. Higher temperatures often result in more varied and creative outputs.

A helpful way to think about temperature is choosing between certainty and exploration.

When temperature is low, the model tends to select the most likely next word or response. When temperature is higher, the model becomes more willing to explore alternative possibilities.

Neither approach is inherently better.

Tasks such as factual question answering often benefit from lower temperatures, while creative writing and brainstorming may benefit from higher temperatures.

Understanding temperature helps explain why the same AI model can behave differently depending on how it is configured.

Why It Matters

Temperature influences the balance between consistency and creativity in AI-generated content.

Real-World Example

An AI writing tool may use a higher temperature when generating story ideas and a lower temperature when summarizing factual information.
